Neil Birnie is a British fiction author whose work explores consciousness, identity, and the emotional threads that connect people across worlds. He began writing The Gatherers in 2002 and completed it years later after relocating to rural France, where the quiet landscape offered the time and clarity to develop its ideas fully.

His stories blend speculative concepts with character‑driven drama, weaving together action, romance, and philosophical questions about the nature of mind and self. Neil continues to write from the French countryside, developing new projects that push deeper into the mysteries of human experience.

MORE ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Moving to a peaceful part of rural France in 2018 gave me the calm and space to explore ideas about consciousness that had always fascinated me: not just the uploading or downloading of consciousness, but the far more complex human questions behind it. I wanted to write something that didn’t just follow the usual sci‑fi patterns, but mixed big concepts with action, romance, and a story that actually means something.

Finishing it has been a long, rewarding journey and I hope it will encourage readers to think about some of the concepts raised in the book as well as enjoying a well-crafted story.
